Count Down to Fall

     This book has beautiful illustrations of fall trees, leaves, and cute animals.  Children can also learn how to count backwards from 10 to 1 in this book.  The children will learn about the  trees with bright leaves from which they fall.  There are aspen, birch, maple, oak, chestnut, linden, pine, beech, dogwood, and sweet gum.   I really enjoyed this book and I loved the beautiful illustrations most of all.  The children will love this book and it will help with counting.  Check it out at the library or your nearest bookstore.

Happy Wednesday my friends.

 

I hope it is a glorious fall day wherever you are in the world.  It is beautiful here and I am so glad I was able to be out and enjoy some it.  Today I am going to write about a favorite fall book that I read to my students when I was teaching every fall.  They loved it too.  I hope you and your children will enjoy it too.  It is a great book to purchase and read every fall.  It has beautiful illustrations and many of them are embossed.  SO the children can feel them . It is an amazing book.  It is called The Lonely Scarecrow.

The Lonely Scarecrow

    I have already said it is an amazing book and that younger kids will love it.  I love it and I just read it again before I started writing my post. It also has some great vocabulary words that you might want to discuss with your child before you read the book.  Some words that you might want to discuss are jagged,marooned,churning,ravaged, vanished, and thaw.

 

    The Lonely Scarecrow sits in a field all alone and he is very lonely.  He wants to be friends with all the animals he sees scurrying around the field.  The animals though are afraid of his flapping coat and jagged metal mouth.  As the swaying wheat grew in the field the scarecrow stood all alone and he was very lonely.  Then the combine monster comes to harvest the wheat and the lonely scarecrow is just left standing in the barren field.  Then the winds started to blow and the scarecrow got even lonelier, for he knew winter was coming. Snow fell heavily one night and transformed the lonely scarecrow into a friendly snowman.  All the animals came to see the friendly snowman and play on and around him.  The the snow started to melt and the scarecrow wondered if his new friends would stay around after he was the scary scarecrow again and not the friendly snowman.  Please check out this book at the library or your favorite bookstore. You will enjoy it!!!!!

 

 

The kids would love making cut or ugly scarecrows after they read the book.

The Mystery of the Runaway Scarecrow

  This book is for 9, 10, 11 year olds.  It is a mystery about the disappearance of Buster the Scarecrow.  Buster is a popular feature of the Fall Festival in Fairfield.  It is also about Sarah-Jane, Timothy, and Titus from the Three Cousins Detective Club.  It seems Buster is gone and left a note saying that he's tired of standing around and would like to travel!  Everyone is a buzz in Fairfield as to who wrote the note.  The TCDC is on the case .  So read the book to find out who took Buster and why.

 

  This is a Christian book and the author has written several of the books all detective stories.  So check out Elspeth Campbell Murphy if you like good Christian detective stories.

The Four Seasons

Fall

    This is a really cute book for young children.  The boy and girl go on many adventures having to do with fall.  They go back to school, they ride their bikes through the park and the leaves are falling all around.  Then they go to the store and see all the different kinds of apples.  Their grandfather is growing pumpkins so they go to the garden to look at them.  They pick grapes and berries from the bushes. Their mother makes jam with the berries and the boy and girl help. It is a quick look at fall activities

that young children would enjoy.  The book has great illustrations too and some questions parents could ask children for more comprehensions which is a very good reading skill.  It also has a couple of activities at the end that you could do with your child.

The Fall Gathering

   This book is for preschool and primary grades based on learning the concept of Quantity, such as how much and how many.  The story takes place of course in the fall in a woodland region of the Great Lakes of North America.  This was the homeland of more than twenty Native American nations.  The book's focus is the annual gathering to share and give thanks for the harvest.  The

 children can count along and see each page which shares the number of things brought to the festival.  This is a great book for children to strengthen their counting skills and help them to learn to share and cooperate with others.  At the end of the book the author shares  about the woodland tribes of the Great Lakes.  She also shares some woodland recipes.   One of my favorites is the Woodland Fry Bread.  A good activity after reading and talking about the book would be to try the 5 Woodland Recipes at the end of the book with your family that night for dinner.  It would be a great learning experience. Great book!!!!  Happy Reading!!!!!

Fall Leaves

   This book is a Kindergarten-First grade book.  It has wonderful illustrations and just a few words on each page about fall leaves.  It would be a great book to teach young children about leaves and a great first reading book.  It also has activity pages at the end of the book that you could do with your child after you read the book.  It is a book young children would enjoy.

Fall

I thought I would share another activity out of this  book that I shared about on Wednesday.  This activity I thought both boys and girls would enjoy.  It is making a leaf monster. :)

 

 

First, collect colorful leaves of different shapes and then paste them to a piece of paper in the shape of a monster. Find a nice large leaf for the head and one for the body.  Use some seeds or tiny leaves for a face.  Glue them on.  The kids will come up with all kinds of monsters.  When the monster is finished put it between newspaper and under some heavy books for a week or two and then hang it up.  A really cute fall decoration.

The Colors of Fall

   This is a great fall road trip book if you live in the New England area or the Appalachians.  Also, if you are planning a fall trip to see the beautiful fall trees. The authors even give GPS coordinates for areas  in the book.  They give interesting places to visit for each road trip and how long to get there .  It would be a great book to have if you were planning a trip to New England or the Appalachians.  They also tell you the peak seasons to see the best fall foliage.  The book is full of beautiful pictures of fall foliage, lakes, and waterfalls.  I have decided a trip to New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine should be on my list of places to go and the fall of the year would be the perfect time to go.  Check out this book and see where you would like to go and enjoy the beautiful pictures.  Personally, I can't wait for the leaves to change here in Missouri too.

Mouses's First Fall

     Hooray for fall.  That is what Mouse and Minka say as they venture out to play on a fall day.  They love the colors of the leaves, red, yellow, orange and brown.  They get excited about all the shapes and colors of the leaves.  They run and skip through the leaves and even pile them up and jump in them.  Even Minka hides in the leaves and Mouse has to find her.  It is a really cute and colorful fall book for young children to help them enjoy the leaves of fall.  Check one out at your local library or bookstore.  Happy Reading!!!!!

Leaf Book

from the Fall Book

First of all collect twelve leaves from different trees around your neighborhood or park. All kinds of colors will look good in your book.

Neatly mount the leaves on sheets of paper with transparent tape.  Try to put three or four leaves on each page.

Try to label each leaf with its correct name.  You might also need a leaf book from the library for all the names.

When you have them all labeled make a cover for your book.

 

Get some construction paper in pretty fall colors and draw some leaves on the front cover.

Then staple all the pages together with the leaf pages and voila you will have a nice leaf book.

When your book is done, place it under some heavy books for several weeks to keep the leaves from curling up.

     I am going to be sharing some good fall books for children the next couple of weeks.  I love fall or autumn and love seeing the leaves and the weather change.  It is a beautiful time of the year.  I always loved raking the leaves and jumping in them in the fall.  I love going to get apples from the apple orchard and my mom would make great applesauce and apple butter.  I loved making leaf books and searching down the different kind of leaves for it.  My daughters loved doing it too.  So many fun and exciting things to do in the fall.  What is your favorite?  Please share in the comments your favorite fall things to do.  We would love to hear from you.  So post a comment friends anytime you would like to.

The Fall Festival

     Who doesn't like a Mercer Mayer book?  They are always so delightful and lessons to be learned.  This one is about a fall festival in the Critter's hometown .  The family is headed to the fall festival.  They can't wait to see all of the fun things to do at the festival.  The Critter family brings a wagon to hold all that they buy.  The first thing they buy are apples and  Little Critter can't resist so he eats one of the apples.  Little Sister has some apple cider.  The family goes on a hayride through the pumpkin patch and then the family looks for a pumpkin for Halloween and Little Critter finds one and so does mom critter.  Little Critter's is to big so they take the one mom found.  They also pick apples from the trees to take home so mom can make apple pies.  Little Critter eats another apple.  The family plays the horseshoe game and dad critter wins a bunny for Little Sister and a bear for Little Critter.  Then it is time to go home and Little Critter decides he has eaten to many apples !!!

   This is a really cute book and one both boys and girls t would enjoy. Ruby's Falling Leaves

This is a really cute book with Max and Ruby.  It is fall and as Ruby says that is why it is fall because of the falling leaves.  Ruby is making a Leaf Book for school.  Her and Max are in the backyard looking for the leaves for her book.  She is  looking for leaves from a willow tree and an apple tree and Max is trying to help.  Together they find the willow and apple leaves and now Ruby is looking for a Japanese maple leaf and a big tooth aspen.  They have a time with all the leaves and the leaves in Max's dump truck getting mixed up but they do find both and Ruby puts them in her book.  Ruby finds all the leaves for her leaf book in the end of the story.

Southern Living

The Official SEC Tailgating Cookbook

 

 

 

     Are you a college football fan?  My team is the Missouri Tigers.  THis is a really cool book with recipes and information about every school in Sec conference.  I enjoyed reading the information and traditions of each school and then the recipes for the tailgating fun listed.  Some of my favorites were the FIzzy Strawberry Lemonade from AUburn University.  The Rocky Top Popcorn from the University of Florida and of course from the University of Missouri  Cowboy Nachos and Tiger Striped Brownie Sundaes.   This book is really amazing and even if you aren't a tailgater there are some really great recipes from drinks to desserts.  It is all covered in this book with great pictures of the food and the schools.  Are you tailgating for a college game tomorrow?  This is the book to get.

     I love the way the author lists the chapters in this book.  Strategy Session-Proper Prior Planning, Kickoff-Snacks, Appetizers and Drinks, Bowl Games-

Soups, beans, and chili, Hot Streak-Main Courses, Pit Stops-Salads, Sides, Breakfast, and Brunch, and Overtime-Desserts.  Such a cute way to do it.  She lists some great recipes including roasting a turkey, and Better Than the Bucket Fried Chicken.  She also gives information and facts about some college teams and it isn't all about football games.  She shares information about the dog sled race in Anchorage, Alaska and NASCAR Racing  and how both has tailgating parties.  Great recipes and great information in one great book.  Check it out when you get a chance especially if you love tailgating.
